Catherine Gaffigan

Catherine Gaffigan is a graduate of the Marymount School of New York City, B.A. in English from St. John's University and M.F.A. in Speech and Drama from the Catholic University of America.

I am a show business professional with over thirty years working as actress, director, teacher and producer in the theatre, on television and in film.

As an actress, I made my New York debut opposite Dustin Hoffman in "Journey of the Fifth Horse." I toured the country for two years in "Cabaret," played "Lady Macbeth," made many television commercials, suffered the agonies of soap opera life, and appeared in both Broadway versions of "Whose Life Is It, Anyway?"

My films include "Julia" and Brian DePalma's thriller "Sisters." In August 2000, I returned to the screen for director Jack Kenny in an independent feature, "Town Diary."

I have served as producer for a series of "Scene Nights" for agents at Manhattan Plaza. and did double duty as the producer-director of the world premiere of "The J.A.R." In 1987 I produced and directed the North American premiere of "Lady Susan" based on the Jane Austen novel of the same name.

Throughout my performing career, I have taught Acting in my own New York studio. I teach Method Acting based on Stanislavski. However, this is not religion. There is nothing to believe. There is no faking, no indicating. Everything is authentic. And the studio where class is held is very conducive to our work. We are in a professional environment.

I love Acting and I love teaching Acting. Each time I see a student make a break-through it is thrilling. I love to see someone discover her or himself by finding and using emotional resourses which they did not know how to bring forth.

My goal is to see you acting as a professional on stage, in television and in film through:

Here are some quotations about my Acting Classes from former students:
From "The Actor's Guide to Qualified Acting Coaches - New York" by Larry Silverberg

"...Catherine is there just for you. I do not know how she does it, but in a class of twelve students she makes me feel as though my development is the only thing important to her. Catherine's directness, ..., sensitivity, intelligence and elegance help us learn simply by example. I can not do justice on paper to her sterling and thoughtful efforts as a teacher..."
(Andrea Blount-Rosen)

"Catherine requires relentless pursuit of the truth hidden in the text. She is a student of humanity and encourages the same from her students. After studying with Catherine, I have gained a deep, abiding respect for the process of discovery... . Catherine is one of those people you remember for the rest of your life. I cannot approach anything I do in the performance arts, whether it is acting, singing, piano, or stand-up comedy without feeling her powerful influence. She is not just an excellent teacher but an extraordinary person. I am better for having known her."
(Ed Ayres)

"Ms. Gaffigan teaches one to be totally focused on what his or her acting partner is doing, so as to keep attention off himself, by various techniques. These techniques do work, and they work quickly. Another extremely important acting techniques Ms. Gaffigan taught me is to trust one's instincts and not go against them..."
(Robert B. G. Horowitz)
